Born in 1956, Eric Bonte is a world-renowned artist specializing in the mastery of glass art, stained glass art, and contemporary glass sculpture. After completing his scientific baccalaureate, Eric pursued his artistic calling at the prestigious National School of Applied Arts and Crafts, Olivier de Serres, in Paris.
During his years at Olivier de Serres, Eric received a comprehensive artistic education but chose to specialize in stained glass art. He was immediately drawn to the limitless interplay of color and light, finding a unique balance between rigorous technical precision and pure creative expression. This dual approach laid the foundation for his future as a leading figure in the world of contemporary art glass.
In 1979, driven by a desire for total creative freedom, Eric took over the historic workshop of JJK Ray in Issy-les-Moulineaux. This move was never about simply maintaining a tradition; it was about securing his artistic independence. By running his own studio, he merged his roles as a visionary creator and a master technician, allowing him to explore his own aesthetic language without compromise.
This independence paved the way for his most daring innovations in deep sandblasted glass and monumental sculpture, where the glass is no longer just a surface, but a medium sculpted by the artist's hand to capture and transform light.
From 1979 to 1988, under his own brand "Eric Bonte Stained Glass," he orchestrated numerous high-profile projects that redefined the role of glass in luxury architecture. His creations became integral parts of the aesthetic identity of iconic locations such as the Plaza Athénée and the Hôtel Raphaël in Paris. This period of intense creativity led Eric to become the trusted glass artist for Jean Bazaine, a titan of French contemporary art. Together, they pushed the medium to its limits, most notably through the execution of the monumental and magnificent stained glass windows for the Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Cathedral, a project that remains a reference in modern sacred art.
A Legacy of Precision and Heritage. Eric also meticulously restored the iconic windows of the Saint-Séverin Church in Paris and created the masterworks for the Chapel of Saint-Guénolé. His rare ability to harmonize a collaborator's artistic vision with absolute technical precision has established him as a premier figure in the global glass art community.
As a painter, draftsman, and glass sculptor, Eric continues to evolve the craft by exploring the intersection of raw material and light through innovative sculptural techniques. His work transcends traditional boundaries, utilizing deep sandblasting to carve into the glass, creating textures and depths that transform the medium into a three-dimensional experience. This unique approach blends the maturity of master craftsmanship with the spontaneous energy of fine art, allowing him to shape glass not just as a surface, but as a living sculpture. Today, his personal creations are sought after globally, pushing the aesthetic possibilities of contemporary art glass into new, unexplored territories.
